Jensen/Mesa vs Fernández/Soriano

The first match to reach its conclusion was Carla Mesa and Claudia Jensen's effort against Ana Fernández and Arantxa Soriano.

Played out on court 3, Jensen and Mesa were much the better pairing from start to finish. While things were more levelled in the opening set, which finished 6-3, it was one-way traffic in the second.

After exactly an hour of play, the match finished 6-3 6-0 to the favourites, who are through to the round of 16.

Here, they will face Marta Ortega and Bea González, the three-seed.

Alayeto/Alayeto (8) vs Reiter/Polo

On court 4, eight-seed Mapi and Majo Sánchez Alayeto were back in action against Ceci Reiter and Julia Polo.

After recovering from an aggravated injury in Marbella to her calf, where she had to retire from her match, Mapi looked back to her very best on Wednesday morning.

Reiter and Polo could never get a look in, the Atomic Twins blowing them away in both sets.

It finished 6-1 6-1 to the Sánchez Alayeto sisters, who are through to the round of 16 once more.

Brea/Icardo (6) vs Villalba/Nogueira

Inaugurating centre court at the Steffl Arena were Tamara Icardo and Delfi Brea, who took on the veteran partnership of Mari Carmen Villalba and Portuguese Ana Catarina Nogueira.

Brea, who was playing her former partner in Nogueira, was on fire from start to finish, playing a near-perfect match in front of the Austrian fans.

Breaking twice and not conceding as much as a break point, the six-seed won the opening set 6-2.

It was more of the same in the second set, Brea and Icardo taking a 4-0 lead and seeing out the match 6-2 6-2 after an hour and 26 minutes.

""

Talaván/Araújo vs Rufo/Goenaga

On court 3, the almost-new pairing of Marta Talaván and Sofia Araújo played youngsters Loreno Rufo and Carmen Goenaga.

Talaván and Araújo caused the upset of the tournament last time out in Marbella, eliminating Gemma Triay and Alejandra Salazar, and they were looking for another good showing on Wednesday.

Winning the opening set 6-3, things were drawn level in the second. Rufo and Goenaga turned it around completely, winning 3-6 themselves to force a decider.

In it, Talaván and Araújo once again took initiative and won with yet another 6-3. They will face the winner of the match below.

""

Riera/Llaguno (5) vs Orsi/Bellver

Second at centre court were the highest-seeded pair in action on Wednesday, five-seed Virginia Riera and Patricia Llaguno. They played Carolina Orsi and Sandra Bellver.

Riera and Llaguno come from a second semi-final appearance in 2022 last week, and carried over that good momentum to Wednesday.

They won the first set 6-3 and repeated the trick in the second, with a medical break in the middle of the set. It ended 6-3 6-3, and Riera/Llaguno will play Talaván and Araújo in the second round.

""

Amatriaín/Navarro vs Fernández/Bidahorria

Former number ones Eli Amatriaín and Carolina Navarro were in action on court 4 against Claudia Fernández and Julieta Bidahorria.

The first set was incredibly close from start to finish, and had to be determined via tie-break. Experience shining through, Amatriaín and Navarro dragged it out to win 7-6.

Fernández and Bidahorria responded in the second set. Breaking and keeping hold of the break, they won 3-6 to force a final set.

In it, things were incredibly close once more. The match would go over three hours, with the veterans Amatriaín and Navarro pulling it out 7-6(1).

""

Navarro/Godallier vs Guinart/Cánovas

The Spanish-French tandem of Teresa Navarro and Léa Godallier took to court 3 next, playing Noa Cánovas and Marina Guinart.

Navarro and Godallier had few problems in the opening set, where they broke once and then again to take it 6-2.

Keeping it up in the second set, they took care of business once again, this time on a single break. It ended 6-2 6-4, Godallier and Navarro going through once more.

""

Osoro/Iglesias (7) vs Martínez/Carnicero

The third and final women's match at centre court on Wednesday saw seven-seed Aranza Osoro and Victoria Iglesias, fresh after another semi-final, take on Lucía Martínez and Esther Carnicero.

Martínez and Carnicero started the match by breaking immediately and surprisingly won the first set 4-6.

The seventh-seeded duo was always going to respond, and they did with great effectiveness. 6-3 they won to force a third set.

With momentum on their side, Osoro and Iglesias could complete the comeback in the third and final frame. They won it 6-4.

""

Las Heras/Virseda vs Sussarello/Vinci

On court 4, Bárbara Las Heras and Verónica Virseda started their adventure in Vienna three days after reaching their first-ever final in Marbella.

Taking on Italian qualifiers Giulia Sussarello and Roberta Vinci, Las Heras and Virseda were dominant in the first set, taking it 6-2 within the half-hour.

Sussarello and Vinci were more solid in the second set, but were finally broken late-on. Not able to recover, the match finished 6-2 6-4 after an hour and nine minutes.

Caldera/Rodríguez vs Barrera/Caparros

The new duo of Bea Caldera and Nuria Rodríguez were in action next against qualifiers Marta Barrera and Marta Caparros.

Qualifiers Caparros and Barrera were successful in the first set despite being the overwhelming underdogs, taking it 6-4.

They did not stop there either, staying on top of it in the second set as well. The Martas are through to the round of 16, winning by a double 6-4.

""

Collombon/Castelló vs Hernández/Martínez

The French-Spanish combination of Alix Collombon and Jessica Castelló took to the twenty by ten next against Sandra Hernández and Patricia Martínez.

Collombon and Castelló played the first set like they were in a rush, sweeping it with a dominant 6-0 within the half-hour.

The dynamic stayed the same in the second set. Collombon and Castelló could not be stopped, breaking twice again, and took the set - and with it the match - by 6-1.

""

Cortiles/Clascá vs Saiz/Martínez

Finally, Anna Cortiles and Xenia Clascá played against Sofia Saiz and Marina Martínez for a spot among the final 16 pairs.

A three-set affair, qualifiers Saiz and Martínez struck first, taking the opening set 4-6.

Cortiles and Clascá did not want to go home just yet, and responded by winning the second set 6-3 to take it all the way.

The two Spaniards took this momentum into the third set, going two breaks up and not looking back. It finished 4-6 6-3 6-1.
