Valencia's pre-qualifying concludes with successful return of Italian duo

Pre-qualifying for the Estrella Damm Valencia Open 2022 came and went over the weekend as the penultimate event before the summer break kicked off on the Spanish east coast.

The women's Circuit was marked by the return of a successful Italian duo, while many other surprises were thrown up too.

We start with pre-qualifying's top seed Nuria Vivancos and Lourdes Pascual, who did not take long to get past Carla Mocete and Aida Martínez on Monday. It finished 6-0 6-2.

Italians Giula Sussarello and Roberta Vinci were united once again for this event, and successfully so. They too won 6-0 6-2, knocking out fellow countrywomen Francesca Ligotti and Valentina Tommasi.

Three-seed Mónica Gómez and Manuela Schuck struggled more but eventually won as well, taking care of Iris Donate and Cristina Musial in three sets; 6-2 4-6 6-1.

Raquel Segura and Nicole Traviesa continued with their fine form too, beating Letizia Manquillo and Patricia Ribeiro in three long sets 5-7 7-5 7-5 after over two-and-a-half hours.

One of the surprises in pre-qualifying saw María Rodríguez and Mireia Herrada convincingly beat five-seed Martina Fassio and Giorgia Marchetti by 6-3 6-1.

Russian Ksenia Sharifova and her Spanish counterpart Estela Francés got a big win in their duel against Marina Pinacho and Carolina Petrelli, beating them 6-4 6-2 to get a step closer to the main draw.
