To the rhythm of Salazar

Semifinals day at the Estrella Damm Barcelona Master 2021 got underway with top seeds Gemma Triay and Alejandra Salazar facing Patty Llaguno and Virginia Riera.

Both pairs have enjoyed success this year, with Salazar and Triay topping the rankings thanks to four tournament wins in Alicante, Valladolid, Malaga and most recently in Sardinia - while Llaguno and Riera took the trophy earlier this year in Vigo.

Here, the first set got underway with Llaguno and Riera immediately breaking serve, before Salazar and Triay responded with a break of their own. The key moment came later when the number one seeds broke Llaguno - after she and Riera had bravely saved a series of break points - to go 4-2 up. Salazar and Triay went on to take the set 6-3.

The top-ranked pair were feeling good, and kept their momentum going with a break in game one of set two - before once again Llaguno and Riera responded - and then went 3-1 ahead. Llaguno and Riera never stopped fighting, but it was Salazar and Triay who were now firmly on top. They kept getting better.

Another break put them on the brink at 5-2, and Gemma Triay's serve didn't let her down.

A 6-3, 6-2 win in an hour and 24 minutes for the number one seeds, Gemma Triay and Alejandra Salazar.
