The Alayetos deactivate their Kryptonite

An epic game of ups and downs goes to the Alayetos

The Alayetos deactivate their Kryptonite

Alejandra Salazar and Marta Marrero awaited their opponents in the final of the Estrella Damm Alicante Open. The second finalists would be either Mapi and Majo Sanchez Alayeto or Patty Llaguno and Eli Amatriain. Eli and Patty were the only pairing to defeat the twins in 2017 and they tried to use that to their advantage. The sisters broke at the start however but Llaguno and Amatriain responded with a break of their own straight away. They consolidated their serve and in the fourth game they broke the twins yet again. At 4-2 down, the sisters reduced the deficit with a break and it was 4-4. This is when their determination came good as they broke again and won the first set 6-4.

The second set really got the fans going. The volume increased in the arena and the players responded. The number ones couldn't speculate and they had to play at their best if they didn't want an upset to reach their first final of the season. In the blink of an eye, they were up 4-1. Patty and Eli didn't throw in the towel and broke the twins to love to make it 5-3. They held onto their serve for 5-4 and then stunned the Alayetos again as they served to win the match, levelling it at 5-5. Patty and Eli were then 6-5 up and no one could quite believe what they were witnessing. Mapi and Majo kept their cool and forced a tiebreak where they needed three match points to close it out. The twins reach their first final.
