Stupaczuk and Ruiz blast past number ones Galán and Lebrón in shock Cordoba Open semi-final

A big shock took place in the second Cordoba Open semi-final as fifth-seeded Franco Stupaczuk and Alejandro Ruiz de-throned number ones Alejandro Galán and Juan Lebrón on Saturday evening.

Galán and Lebrón were on a 10-game winning streak, having won the previous two Opens in Lugo and Menorca, but were second-best all match long. Few people would have expected this, although Stupa and Ruiz already beat the number ones at the Madrid Open earlier this season.

The opening four games went according to plan, until the first shock came when Ruiz and Stupaczuk convincingly broke service. The main cause for this was the vast number of unforced errors being committed by both Galán and Lebrón. Like true number ones, they counter-broke, but never looked the better outfit.

Two games later, at 4-4, Stupa and the fantastic Ruiz again broke, and successfully served for the set after. 6-4 to the underdogs.

You come at the king, you best not miss

Manager Carlos Pozzoni saw his two players rise to an even higher level. Alex Ruiz was playing like he was the number one on the court, while Stupaczuk was keeping rallies alive to his opponents' frustration. That frustration led to more unforced errors, and those errors led to breaks. Not once, but twice were the number ones broken. The second set finished 6-2, sending Ale Galán and Juan Lebrón packing.

As for Franco Stupaczuk and Alex Ruiz, they play one of the most in-form pairings in all of padel on Sunday in Paquito Navarro and Martín Di Nenno.

Everything came off today. To beat the number ones, there is no other way than to play at 200%. If not they send you home. I think we played well from start to finish.
