Shocks and upsets in the women's first round in Granada

The women's main draw got underway on Wednesday afternoon. The Granada Open 2018 began at Club Padel Sport Granada Indoor with twelve matches to define the last sixteen.

Teresa Navarro and Victoria Iglesias took on Carla Mesa and Lucía Martínez in a match which had a local presence on either side of the net. Both pairings have taken each other on up to four times already this season with two wins apiece. Navarro and Iglesias pushed ahead in their head-to-head record by winning 7-6 / 6-3.

Verónica Virseda and Sandra Hernández moved onto the next round with a solid 7-6 / 6-3 victory against Alicia Blanco and Beatriz Caldera. A win which puts them in the last sixteen for the seventh time this season.

Nuria Rodríguez and Ángela Caro are back in the last sixteen after overcoming a long clash against Maite Gabarrús and Nuria Rovira (6-3 / 3-6 / 6-4) which took up to two and a half hours. This is their fourth presence in the last sixteen.

The big surprise of the day was pulled off by Delfina Brea and Ana Catarina Nogueira who knocked out the world number five pairing, Elisabet Amatriaín and Patricia Llaguno. The recent winners of the Villa de San Javier Challenger saw how Brea and Nogueira saved a set point in the first set to end up winning 7-5 / 6-4.

Marta Talaván and Tamara Icardo are also back in the last sixteen after beating Ana Alicia Seijas and Sara Ruiz Soto 6-7 / 6-1 / 6-0. This will be the first time they feature in the second round since the Estrella Damm Valencia Master.

The quickest win of the day belonged to Carolina Navarro and Cecilia ReiterThe world number 7 pairing played a perfect match to win 6-0 / 6-0 against Elena Ramirez and Raquel Segura.

Aranzazu Osoro and Nela Brito maintain their hot form and dominated Noelia Márquez and Xenia Clascá from start to finish (6-3 / 6-2). The Argentines are vying for their third quarter final apperance of the season.

Ana Fernández de Ossó and Virginia Riera took on Valeria Pavón and Paula Josemaría in what was expected to be one of the most even matches of the day. It proved to be just that, with Fernández de Ossó and Riera winning 6-3 / 2-6 / 6-4.

Alba Galán and Mª Carmen Villalba have also put their names amongst the best sixteen pairings in Granada after beating Araceli Martínez and Alicia Lilian Berl 6-4 / 6-1. The paring coached by Ramiro Choya will try to reach their second quarter finals of the season.

The Spanish/French duo of Sara Pujals and Alix Collombon continues to progress after advancing with a 6-4 / 6-3 victory against Jessica Castelló López and Anna Cortiles.

Meli García Truchado and Sofia Araújo want to repeat their extraordinary run in Lisbon and they got off to the right start by defeating Melania Merino and Esther Carnicero 6-3 / 5-7 / 6-4. They're now a win away from their best result together.

Catalina Tenorio and Beatriz González didn't slip up in their opener in Granada. 6-3 / 6-2 was the scoreline in their favour against Ainhoa Rico and Irene Arzamendi. The pairing coached by Manu Martin are aiming to keep up the form that took them into the final of the San Javier Challenger last week.
