Alejandra Salazar and Gemma Triay will defend their title in the Estrella Damm Alicante Open after fending off Verónica Virseda and Barbara Las Heras in Saturday afternoon's semi-finals.

The number ones will dispute their fourth consecutive final, and their fourth consecutive final against the number-two seeded Ariana Sánchez and Paula Josemaría.

An entertaining match from start to finish, Virseda and Las Heras could not keep up the level they played at to start Saturday's semi-final at the Centre de Tecnificació Esportiva d'Alacant.

Sputtering start

With a whirlwind start, 11th-placed Virseda and Las Heras won the first nine points in the row, breaking and taking a 3-0 lead.

After a talking-to from Rodri Ovide on the bench, Triay and Salazar then flipped the switch, winning five games in a row from 4-1 to take the opening set 6-4.

The second act of the semi-final was a lot more one-sided, Triazar settling into a rhythm while Virseda and Las Heras could not provide the resistance like the set before.

With consecutive breaks, Triay and Salazar won 6-2 in the second set to put them in their 14th final since the start of last season.
