Salazar and Triay equal historic win record in Menorca

2021's number ones of the world Alejandra Salazar and Gemma Triay have won their ninth title of the season on the weekend at the Estrella Damm Menorca Open 2022, equaling the record for most titles in a single campaign.

After a slight dip in form, going winless for five tournaments, Salazar and Triay have now won back-to-back titles in Santander and Triay's native Menorca.

In the 2021 campaign, the Spaniards won eight titles from ten finals, notably going on a five-title, 23-match winning streak in the second half of the season.

Only once has a women's couple won nine titles in a season before - Mapi and Majo Sánchez Alayeto in 2017.

The historic numbers in context

Salazar and Triay have now drawn level with the record set by Mapi and Majo Sánchez Alayeto in 2017 when they returned to being number ones of the world.

It should be noted, however, that the Alayeto sisters won nine of a possible 12, while Salazar and Triay have won nine in the 18 tournaments so far in 2022.

Additionally, the twins missed one of the 12 tournaments in Granada as Mapi fell ill on the evening of the tournament.

2017 is the most dominant season ever in women's padel. The Sánchez Alayeto sisters won nine titles, seven of which in a row, and won 30 matches straight, all of which are records that still stand to this day.

The Atomic Twins are four-time number ones in 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2018, and are the winningest couple of all time with 32 titles to their name.

In second place, with 17 titles, are Triay and Salazar. While they are already one of the best women's couples of all time, they still have a long way to go to be the most successful.
