Paquito and Di Nenno were into their eighth semi-final of the year

The first men's quarterfinal of the Estrella Damm Barcelona Master 2021 already looked like a classic on paper. It featured two pairs who have gotten used to facing off on court this year: Fernando Belasteguín and Sanyo Gutiérrez against Paquito Navarro and Martín Di Nenno.

They had met two times before and each time, a different pair had emerged victorious. The final in Vigo went the way of Sanyo and Bela, while a quarterfinal in Málaga was won by Di Nenno and Navarro. Here, it was the latter pair that started out on top.

They went three games ahead in set one, and although their opponents did their best to react, came out on top 6-3. Bela and Sanyo had finished that first set strongly though, and continued that form early in the second.

In the eighth game the break came that gave them the opportunity to take the match to a third set. 6-3 to the Argentinian pair. The quarterfinal would be decided in set three.

There were echoes of the first set, as Paquito and Martin started well, and again took a 3-0 lead. That was the advantage they needed, with one more break giving them the set 6-2, and with it, the match. Paquito Navarro and Martín Di Nenno were into their eighth semi-final of the year.
