Ortega/González, Lamperti/Sanz win enthralling Tau Cerámica Getafe Challenger 2022

The first Challenger of the 2022 season is in the books as Marta Ortega and Bea González won the Tau Cerámica Getafe Challenger, as did Jon Sanz and Miguel Lamperti on the men's side.

The Pabellón Juan de la Cierva in Getafe was filled to the brim with local padel fans, watching the first of six Challenger events unfold in front of their eyes.

For Sanz and Lamperti, it is the first piece of silverware in their new partnership. González and Ortega have won before, but this was their first tournament win since reuniting as a pairing in the latter stages of 2021.

Women's Tau Cerámica Getafe Challenger 2022 final

Second-seeded pairing in the tournament Marta Ortega and Bea González took on the ninth seed and Challenger final debutants in Carla Mesa and young Claudia Jensen in Sunday morning's final.

Ortega and González were the overwhelming favourites coming into the final but were met by a very resilient duo on the other side of the court.

Things were tied at four games apiece in the first set when the breakthrough eventually came. The higher-seeded pairing of Bea and Marta broke to win the opening set 6-4.

Despite the best efforts of Jorge de Benito to rally Jensen and Mesa, the second set was a lot more one-sided. Ortega and González' aggressive play could not be slowed down, and they broke once and twice to win the set 6-1 to claim the match, and with it, the tournament.

Men's Tau Cerámica Getafe Challenger 2022 final

The final match of the week in Getafe was the men's final, which featured the one-seed Miguel Lamperti and Jon Sanz against the third seeded pair in Miguel S.Piñeiro and Javier Martinez.

Lamperti and Sanz were favourites heading into the match and looked for an early break. Piñeiro and Martínez were not having it, however, holding their own and almost getting ahead themselves.

The set had to be decided via tiebreak, and Piñeiro/Martínez sealed it, taking a surprise first set 6-7.

Lamperti and Sanz were always going to respond, and they did by going up 4-2, only to be counter-broken. Tied at five games each, Sanz and Lamperti then came through in a big way to force a third set, winning 7-5.

In the final set, Sanz and Lamperti again took the lead and this time successfully held on. After two hours, it finished 6-7 7-5 6-3.
