The afternoon session of the last sixteen in Andorra started with a tight contest on court two between Guillermo Lahoz and Pablo Lijo Santos against Ignacio G. Gadea and Germán Tamame. After ten games without a break, it finally came in the eleventh game for Gadea and Tamame, before Lijo and Lahoz responded in the following game to force a tiebreak. Willy Lahoz's class shone in the tiebreak to decide the first set. In the second set, Severino Iezzi's men reacted, as Tamame started to display his power and Gadea his talent. A 6-4 scoreline forced a third set. In the last set, the winners of the Marseille Challenger proved that they're in sweet form and qualified for the quarter finals after winning 6-2. It's the first time that Gadea and Tamame have reached this round in an Open as a pairing. The world number two pairing, Francisco Navarro and Carlos Daniel Gutierrez made their debut in the tournament against Pedro Alonso-Martínez and Aris Patiniotis. The Andalusian and the Argentine reached the next round in no time. 6-3 was the score in the first set, which took just 38 minutes. Paquito's shots were causing a lot more damage in the altitude of Andorra, and Sanyo was very precise in controlling the tempo of play. Patiniotis and Alonso-Martinez found no response and lost 6-1 as their opponents reached the quarter finals. There was an all-out battle in the final match on court two between José A. García Diestro - Martín Sánchez Piñeiro and Javier Ruiz - Uri Botello. The first set went to a tiebreak, where Diestro and Piñeiro came out on top of a breaker which had over 24 points. The second set followed a similar pattern, with a nail-biting ending which this time went to Ruiz and Botello in a tiebreak. In the third set, Diestro and Piñeiro upped their game and broke their opponents twice to win 6-3 and reach the quarter finals for the first time as a pairing. The last sixteen ended on centre court with a clash between the Diaz Sangiorgio brothers. The number three seeds, Maximiliano Sánchez and Matías Díaz against Gonzalo Díaz and Luciano Capra. An intense match was expected between two pairings that know each other perfectly. And that's exactly how it went. In the first set, despite the alternatives on either side of the net, a tiebreak was needed to decide who gained the first advantage. Losing the first set was a tough blow for Diaz and Capra, who took a while to get going in the second set. Mati and Maxi broke in the third game and marched on towards the quarter finals with another break in the sixth game, winning 6-2 in an hour and 39 minutes. The quarter finals are completed at the Vallbanc Andorra Open 2017.
