New faces in the Joma Barcelona Challenger semifinals

Antonio Luque and Cristian Germán Gutiérrez sprung a surprise to reach the last four at the Joma Barcelona ChallengerMarina-Ruiz vs. Botello-Blanco and Luque-Gutierrez vs. Rubio-Ruiz make up the semifinals.

In a unique setting, surrounded by the impressive Montserrat mountains and with a full house in the Slam Club Collbató stands, the quarter finals of the second Challenger of the season took place, with two top drawer spectators...the number 1 pairing in the World Padel TourFernando Belasteguin and Pablo Lima.

Uri Botello and Adrian Blanco were in no mood for upsets and put an to David Leal and Ricardo Martinez's dreams.

An early break in both sets put them ahead and gave them the confidence to play their best padel, taking the clash 6-3, 6-2, in what was their best performance in their short spell as a pairing.

Hard-fought win for Ruiz-Marina

All the excitement was reserved for the second match of the day, which was decided in the third set tie break by Alejandro Ruiz and Matias Marina. The number 2 seeds and winners of the Lisbon Challenger were made to suffer to book their tickets for the semifinals against the plucky Matias Nicoletti and Gerard Company (6-4, 3-6, 7-6).

The difference in the first set was a break in favour of Ruiz-Marina, whereas in the second set, Nicoletti and Company started to dominate the net and levelled the affaire.

In the third set, the momentum continued to be with the number nine seeds. When it seemed as if victory was going to be for the Argentine and Catalan, who were 5-2 and 30-15 up, their opponents reacted with two consecutive breaks to level the match and set up a deciding tie break.

Here, Marina and Ruiz stepped it up a gear and took the tie break 7-3.

The best version of Rubio-Ruiz

The Barcelona Challenger is showing the best version of the Spanish champions, Gonzalo Rubio and Javier Ruiz. Yesterday they knocked out the number one seeds and today they put an end to the aspirations of Toni Bueno and Aris Patiniotis.

The Andalucians were rock solid from the get-go and needed just 55 minutes to qualify for their first World Padel Tour semifinals, winning 6-4, 6-2.

 

Toni Bueno bid farewell to the Catalan Challenger with a standing ovation from the fans who spurred him on until the end. A match that was followed by two very special spectators, the number one pairing, Pablo Lima and Fernando Belasteguin.

Gutiérrez-Luque... the revelation

No one included them in the running and they've quietly progressed through the draw to reach their first semifinals. Argentine Cristian German Gutierrez and Andalusian Antonio Luque are the surprise package of this tournament. Today they came back from a set to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 against the Lisbon Challenger finalists and sixth seeds, Jose Antonio Garcia Diestro and Ruben Rivera.

Losing the first set didn't hamper the number 16 seeds' morale, as they came out looking to turn things around. Playing very good lobs and showing a great understanding on court, they took the match to a deciding set, where  Gutierrez-Luque had the upper hand. They will leave Catalan soil tremendously strengthened.

Tomorrow, from 18:00 onwards and with plenty of new faces, the semifinals of the Joma Barcelona Challenger will take place at the Slam Club Collbató...an unmissable event.
