Afternoon Last Sixteen Session

Tight matches, near upsets, seeds struggling to reach the quarter finals...The afternoon session of the last sixteen was as exciting as it comes for padel fans in Alicante.

Allemandi - Lebrón VS Piñeiro - Diestro

Second tournament as a pairing for Juan Lebrón and Adrián Allemandi, who took on Martín Sánchez Piñeiro and José Antonio García Diestro.

An even clash from the start as both pairings made the most of their skills. The first difference came at 5-5 as Piñeiro's power and Diestro's consistency wreaked havoc to win the following two games and take the set 7-5.

But Allemandi never goes down without a fight and his determination was well accompanied by Lebron's magic to level the match at a set ll. They knew how to suffer in key moments and took the battle into a tie break where they were more decisive to force a third set.

In the final sets there was break after break. At 2-1, Lebron and Allemandi broke away but Piñeiro/Diestro struck back in the eighth game to make it 4-4. There was an immediate break back from the Argentine/Spanish duo to make it 5-4 and they served it out. 6-4 and the quarter finals for Juan Lebron and Tito Allemandi.

Bela and Lima suffered to advance

The World Padel Tour's number one pairing entered the scene. Fernando Belasteguín and Pablo Lima versus Ernesto Moreno and ‘Chico’ Gomes.

Bela and Lima were on the back of a Gran Canaria Open where they didn't find their best version and at the start of this match they also struggled to overpower their opponents. Moreno and Gomes went toe to toe with them and they forced a tiebreak which they took, stunning the crowd in Alicante.

Bela and Lima knew they had to switch things up to turn the tide. They came out much more aggressive and won 6-2 in just over half an hour to force a third set.

Chico Gomes and Ernesto Moreno knew they had nothing to lose and that made them play at a level that continued to make life difficult for the number one pairing. Bela and Lima were made to sweat to grab a break and they just about held on to win 6-4. Gomes and Moreno went down with their heads held high as Fernando Belasteguin and Pablo Lima reach the quarter finals.

Paquito and Sanyo do their homework

Just after their main opponents in the fight for the number one ranking got the job done, it was time for Paquito Navarro and Sanyo Gutiérrez to appear in front of the 3,000 fans that turned up at the Pedro Ferrandiz for their match against Fede Quiles and Marcello Jardim.

Knowing well how hard it is to reach the quarter finals, and even more so having seen how tough Bela and Lima found it, Paquito and Sanyo were switched on from the get go to take a 3-0 lead. But Quiles and Jardim's experience was going to complicate the set for them and the number two seeds would finally take the set 6-4.

By then, any mistake was expensive and Jardim/Quiles ensured they would keep up their level. Once again there would be just a break for the world number two pairing. 6-4 for Paquito and Sanyo, who reach the next round.

Nerone and Ruiz win the Alicante marathon

The last place in the quarter finals would go to the winner of Seba Nerone - Álex Ruiz vs. Pablo Lijó - Willy Lahoz.

Two pairings of similar potential which, on paper, promised a tight match. In the first set Lijo and Lahoz took a 3-0 lead and that advantage was enough for them to win the first set 6-3.

The second set would be the opposite of the first. But when it seemed that the Spanish/Argentine pairing was going to control the set at 5-3, Lijo's powerful strokes appeared to break back and make it 5-5. At 6-6, the tiebreak went to the pairing coached by Rodrigo Ovide to force a third set.

The final quarter finalist would be decided by the smallest of margins. In the end, Nerone and Ruiz won a marathon match in 2 hours and 48 minutes. The last set ended 6-3 and Seba Nerone and Alex Ruiz complete the quarter final lineup at the Estrella Damm Alicante Open.
