Josemaría and Sánchez firm, other top four seeds all out in Madrid Master quarter-finals! The second slot in the semi finals of the 2018 Estrella Damm Alicante Open came from the clash between Matías Díaz - Alejandro Galán and Sanyo Gutiérrez-y Maxi Sánchez. A clash between two pairings that have started the season strongly. The winners of the Estrella Damm Catalunya Master were susrpised early on by the solidity of Matias Diaz and versatility of Ale Galan in attack. An early break put the Spanish/Argentine duo ahead as they punished the number two seeds' inconsistency. However, Gutierrez and Sanchez weren't going to leave things like that and they started to control the net much more to level the set at 3-3. Mariano Amat's pupils were being punished for their unforced errors and their opponents were growing in confidence. Only a tiebreak could separate the two. Maxi Sanchez brought out his best, with some powerful smashes, but the duo from San Luis still needed four set points to win the set 7-6 in an hour and six minutes. In the second set, Diaz and Galan tried to turn the tide. They stepped up their tempo and took a 3-0 lead after an aggressive start. Sanyo's class was making Diaz and Galan doubt, as they lost their serve. Diaz and Galan broke again in the eighth and served out to win the st 6-3 after two hours of play.In the third set, things got even again. Diaz and Galan set the tempo again but this time there wasn't the same response from their rivals. Mati Diaz was dominating from the forehand court and Galan was smashing every ball he could, leading them to break twice. They served at 5-2 to win the match but Maxi and Sanyo found a way to get back into the match by breaking and then holding their serve. At 5-4, they once again had two break points, but this time Mati Diaz and Galan held their nerve to reach the semifinals after winning 6-4 in two hours and 45 minutes.Galan and Diaz gain revenge over their conquerors in Badalona to progress at the Estrella Damm Alicante Open.
