The latter being the only pairing ranked outside the top 8 in the quarter finals of the Lugo Open 2018. Despite not being the favourites on paper, they grabbed the first break of the match in the sixth game (4-2). Martinez's control from the forehand court and Mesa's definition from the other side was the driving force behind them getting the chance to serve for the set at 5-3. But Ortega and Sanchez rallied backand won the set 7-5 in 50 minutes. The good sensations with which they ended the first set spilled over into the second. Ortegan and Sanchez upped the tempo but Mesa and Martinez found a way to win four out of five games to win the set 6-4 and force a decider. In the third set seven games went by before the first break. It went to Sanchez and Ortega but they were countered as the score was 4-4. At 5-4 on return, Mesa and Martinez had 2 match points but they didn't claim it. The set went into a tiebreak and again they had chances to win at 6-3 but Marta and Ari pulled off an epic turnaround to win the breaker and reach the semifinals in two hours and fifty minutes.
