Marta Marrero drops out of Malmö Padel Open with ankle injury

Former number one Marta Marrero will miss the Areco Malmö Padel Open 2021 after suffering an ankle injury.

The Spaniard, who won the Swedish Open last time World Padel Tour traveled there in 2019, will be sidelined this time out.

This means she and her partner Lucía Sainz will not compete in the final tournament of the women's Circuit before next month's Madrid Master Final.

Sainz cannot find a last-minute replacement to play with in Sweden as the two were already registered as a pair for the tournament.

Consequences for Marta Marrero

Currently the fifth-ranked pair in The Race 2021, Marrero and Sainz are already qualified for the Master Final. However, they could drop to sixth. This depends on the performances of Aranzazu Osoro-Victoria Iglesias and Bea González-Marta Ortega. Ortega was Marrero's partner in 2019, when they won the Swedish Open and finished the year as the number one-ranked pair in the women's Circuit.

Winning a total of 14 tournaments in the previous seasons, Marta Marrero has yet to take a tournament in 2021 despite making three finals. Re-united with her old partner Lucía Sainz, they were playing at a very high level.

Playing just two tournaments alongside each other, they reached the final in Menorca and the semi-finals in Cordoba, seemingly gathering momentum and recovering the chemistry they previously had.

On behalf of everyone at World Padel Tour, we wish Marta a speedy recovery!
