The first Master of the 2022 World Padel Tour season has already thrown up several surprises as two of the top three seeds were knocked out in the Cervezas Victoria Marbella Master 2022 round of 16.

With eight matches played out at the Marbella Arena centre court as well as the supporting court 2, there was room for only eight pairs in Friday's quarter-finals.

Marbella Arena centre court

First on the menu on Thursday morning at centre court were three-seed Marta Ortega and Bea González, who faced one of the breakout couples of 2022 in Bárbara Las Heras and Verónica Virseda.

Next up are two-seed Paula Josemaría and Ariana Sánchez, who faced qualifying survivors Lorena Alonso and Melania Merino.

Finally, reigning number ones Alejandra Salazar and Gemma Triay were in action as they took on the new pairing of Sofia Araújo and Marta Talaván.

Court 2 highlights

The other five round of 16 matches were played out on court 2, starting with Carla Mesa and Claudia Jensen who took on Marina Guinart and Noa Canovas.

Two-time tournament winners Tamara Icardo and Delfi Brea were next in action as they faced Brussels semi-finalists Lucía Martínez and Esther Carnicero.

Last week's Challenger winners Lucía Sainz and Marta Marrero were third, playing Léa Godallier and Teresa Navarro for a ticket to the quarter-final.

Five-seed Virginia Riera and Patricia Llaguno stepped onto the twenty by ten against pre-qualifying pairing Ksenia Sharifova, the first Russian ever in a round of 16, and Raquel Segura.

Finally, Aranza Osoro and Victoria Iglesias were in action against Sandra Bellver and Carolina Orsi.
