Lucía Sainz and Gemma Triay get an honours degree at the Master

The women's final of the Estrella Damm Catalunya Master pitted together Gemma Triay - Lucía Sainz and Marta Marrero - Alejandra Salazar at the Olimpic de Badalona.

The first set was as tight as one would expect in a final, with the number 2 and 3 seeds proving that they're going to try and dismantle the Alayetos at the top. The score was level until the 5th game when Pablo Ayma's players struck and didn't lose another game to win 6-2.

The second set started just as the first one ended, with Gemma and Lucia controlling and breaking in the third game. Alejandra's niggling calf injury wasn't enough to stop her as both she and Marta Marrero broke back in the eighth game, making it 4-4 and gaining enough confidence to break Gemma and Lucia right at the end of the set again to win 7-5.

The third set was a fight for Alejandra and Marta to stay in it, while their opponents looked to seal the match. Two breaks in the 3rd and 7th games gave them a seemingly definitive 5-2 lead. The number two seeds' survival instincts helped them regain one of those breaks but they couldn't complete the comeback. Gemma and Lucia won 6-4 and took their first title of the season at the Estrella Damm Catalunya Master.
