Italians triumph as women's Malmö Padel Open qualifiers come to an end

The women's Malmö Padel Open qualifiers have come to an end on the evening of the tournament in Sweden.

Two Italians have managed to make it through to the final draw out of all the internationals, the other 13 falling in either the first or second round.

Here is a recap of the four finals and how all international - non-Spanish or Argentinian - players got on.

First women's Malmö Padel Open qualifiers

At 7 pm local time, the first game of the evening got underway between Nuria Rodríguez and the Italian Carolina Orsi against Belgian ace Helena Wyckaert and Julia Polo.

The first set started off equally, the two pairs well-matched, until Orsi and Rodríguez found the breakthrough they needed. They broke and held on to win 6-4.

Following their first set, they turned up the style in the second. Wyckaert and Polo barely got a look in and Orsi was purring, dispatching their opponents 6-1 to make it through to the final draw. They face Léa Godallier and Ariadna Cañellas in the round of 32.

Three Italians were up next in Giulia Sussarello with her Argentinian partner Nelida Brito against Chiara Pappacena and Giorgia Marchetti.

Brito and Sussarello have been to Opens before and it showed, stamping their authority on this game from the off. They raced to a 6-2 in the first set, following it up with a 6-3 in the second set. Pappacena and Marchetti were simply second-best all match long, and their adventure in Sweden ended there.

For Brito and Sussarello, they take on Ana Cortiles and Xenia Clasca Vidiella in the round of 32, the 21st seed.

Final women's Malmö Padel Open qualifiers

Sara Pujals and Nicole Traviesa were up next, facing Isabel Domínguez and Lorena Alonso. The first set was not as close as the score might suggest, although Pujals and Traviesa did pull it out eventually 6-4.

In the second set, things were more straightforward, Pujals and Traviesa not showing mercy and again getting a break. They won it 6-3 to book their place in the round of 32, where they will face Claudia Jensen and Sandra Bellver.

The final of the women's Malmö Padel Open qualifiers saw Ana Fernández and former number one Cecilia Reiter face Alicia Blanco and Sara Ruiz.

Both pairs showed their best selves on the 20 by 10, but it was the experience of Fernández and Reiter that proved key as they edged out the first set 7-5. Although Blanco and Ruiz did not let up, the second set was a repeat of the first.

Reiter and Fernández again broke late and again won 7-5 to ensure their place in the round of 32. They will play locals Anna Åkerberg and Celeste Paz.

The Lucky Loser draw between all losing pairs favoured Isabel Domínguez and Lorena Alonso, who will replace Marta Marrero and Lucía Sainz. The former picked up a late ankle injury, ruling her out from the tournament.
