Italian idols

Giulia Sussarello and Roberta Vinci were no doubt the big story in the women's qualifying. Vinci, who has converted to being a professional padel player this year, was making her WPT debut in pre-qualifying on Saturday.

From there until Sunday evening, she and Sussarello won all four of their matches, beating the two Martas Barrera and Caparros in the final.

More Italians were in action in one of the other four finals, Chiara Pappacena and Giorgia Marchetti. The seventh seed in qualifying, Pappacena and Marchetti played capable opposition in Ana Varo and Alicia Blanco.

In a three-set match, the Italians eventually got the better of their Spanish rivals, qualifying for the first Open of the 2022 calendar. Meeting them in the first round in Miami are Lorena Rufo and Sofia Araujo on Tuesday.

Araceli Martínez and Claudia Fernández were the next winners, taking down the highest-ranked pairing of qualifying in Ana Fernández and Arantxa Soriano. Tied at one set a piece, the third frame was a real landslide, Martínez and Fernández running to a 6-0 victory to secure their tickets to Miami.

Their opposition in Florida will be French number one Alix Collombon and her Spanish counterpart Jessica Castelló.""

The final ticket to the United States was won by Anna Cortiles and Xenia Clasca, the two-seed. in qualifying. Winning their first round match while dropping just four games, they had a lot more trouble in the final.

Remaining internationals

Apart from the four Italians who made it out of qualifying alive, there were three more international players at qualifying.

Sweden's Amanda Girdo played top-seeded Fernández and Soriano in the first round, where she and partner Nelida Brito were beaten in straight sets.
