The women's final of the Estrella Damm Alicante Open 2021 saw four of the world's top players facing off on centre court. Paula Josemaria and Ariana Sanchez - winners of the first tournament of the year in Madrid - went up against Gemma Triay and Alejandra Salazar.

Josemaria and Sanchez had overcome Lucia Sainz and Bea Gonzalez in the semi-finals, while Triay and Salazar had beaten Aranza Osoro and Victoria Iglesias. It promised to be a gripping final here in Alicante. Salazar and Triay started strongly, imposing themselves on the match, as Sanchez and Josemaria struggled to contain them. Two early breaks of serve saw Salazar and Triay go 2-0, and then 4-0 up, with ruthless efficiency, winning two golden points along the way.

A crucial video review at 5-0 brought up another golden point, and Salazar and Triay didn't hesitate, taking the set 6-0 in 33 minutes. In set two, Sanchez and Josemaria needed to change something but instead it was Salazar and Triay who maintained their dominance, with another early break of serve, as they powered into a 3-0 lead.

Sanchez and Josemaria couldn't find a way to turn the tide. The Madrid Open winners didn't give up, and got their first game on the board to make it 5-1 in set two.That reaction had come too late, though, and Salazar and Triay finished the job with just an hour played, taking the second set 6-1.Alejandra Salazar and Gemma Triay were crowned deserved champions of the Estrella Damm Alicante Open 2021 for their first tournament win of the season.
