The number two pairing takes another title

Gemma Triay and Lucía Sainz grab their third title of the season under the Valladolid sun

For the third time this season, the top two pairings in the world rankings took each other on in a final. In this case, the final of the Valladolid Open 2018 was between Majo - Mapi Sánchez Alayeto and Gemma Triay - Lucia Sainz.

The Sanchez Alayeto sisters were the more comfortable of the two pairings at the start of the match as they broke early on but Lucia and Gemma rallied back to make it 3-3 and get the set back on level terms. That's when Majo started to struggle with a groin injury. After being bandaged and assessed by the WPT physio, she got back on court but saw how Triay/Sainz came away with the set at 6-4.

The second set also got off to an even start. The Alayetos broke first again in the fifth game and then consolidated to go up 4-2. Mapi and Majo left behind any possible doubts in their g ame and managed to take the match to a third set by also winning 6-4.

The smallest of details were going to decide a very tight match in which both pairings were being very cautious so as to not give their opponents any advantages. That minor detail was a breab by Gemma and Lucia which was then transformed into a 6-3 win in 2 hours and 35 minutes, making them the champions of the Valladolid Open 2018.
