Gemma and Ale take a fourth title in Sardinia

Gemma Triay and Alejandra Salazar beat Ariana Sánchez and Paula Josemaría in a great three set battle in the final of the Sardinia Open on Sunday, coming from behind to win 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-1.

The world’s top ranked pair turned it around to beat their closest opponents, who remain ahead on The Race on this year’s circuit, in a final for the third time this season in what is turning into a huge rivalry on the women’s tour.

An early break apiece in a very balanced first set gave us no clue as to who would eventually triumph. In the twelfth and final game of the set Ari and Paula had to save two break points to take us to a tie break which they won 7-5 after leading all the way.

The second set started with Gemma and Alejandra in a different mood and breaking twice early on. There was a short comeback as Ari and Paula broke back once but it was wrapped up with another break on their serve to make it 6-3 in 36 minutes and take us to a third and final set.

Two golden points at the beginning of the third both went to Gemma and Ale and two breaks gave them a three-nil lead. Again there was a slight rally from their opponents who never stopped battling, but a third break put the game to bed in a superbly contested final that lasted over two hours.
