Galán, Lebrón survive three-hour epic to make first final of 2022

Number ones Alejandro Galán and Juan Lebrón are through to their first final of the 2022 season after they beat Argentinians Juan Tello and Fede Chingotto in three sets on Saturday.

It took Galán and Lebrón almost three hours to beat the fifth-seeded Chingotto and Tello, breaking the record for most gold points contested in a single World Padel Tour match.

The two-time top-ranked pairing will now fight for its first title of the season on Sunday in Reus.

In a first set that took almost an hour and a half on its own, both pairs would break a total of three times. Both Galán and Lebrón as well as Tello/Chingotto had set points, the former at 5-4 and the latter at 6-5, but it went to a tieb-break. It would go to the Spaniards Lebrón and Galán 7-6 (4).

Chingotto and especially Tello improved drastically in the second set, taking an early 0-2 and nursing for the whole set. It would take until the seventh set point at 4-5 for them to finally win it 4-6.

Reacting like number ones, Lebrón and Galán found another gear in the third and final set. Breaking at 1-1, they again broke at 3-1, perhaps also breaking the spirit of their opponents.

With a third and final break, and a record-breaking total of 17 gold points, Lebrón and Galán won 6-1 after 2 hours and 55 minutes.
