The quarter finals of the Valladolid Open 2018 got underway with a clash between the number five seeds Matías Díaz - Alejandro Galán and of the great surprises this week, Gerard Company - Rubén Rivera who had come all the way from qualifying to get here. Diaz and Galan were looking for their fourth semifinals of the season and set a high tempo from the off. They broke in the third game thanks to Mati Diaz's control and Ale Galan's execution. They were racing away and picking their opponents apart until they eventually took the first set 6-1 in just 26 minutes.
Diaz and Galan were making the most of the possible fatigue of their opponents, who were playing their fifth match in four days, and their nerves at being in their first ever quarter finals. The number five seeds broke at the start of the second set and everything seemed completely under control. The definitive break came in the ninth game on the back of some moments of magic from Galan. The final score was 6-3 and Diaz-Galan were through to the semifinals in 54 minutes.
