Danish round of 32 round-up: Ortega/González off to flying start, Claudia Fernández makes history

The Danish Padel Open 2022 round of 32 has been completed on Wednesday as the second half of fixtures was played out at the Royal Stage Hillerød.

Several of the top eight seeds were in action throughout the day, all three courts under the same roof on the outskirts of Copenhagen.

Here is what happened in the final six matches of the first round in Denmark.

Ortega/González (6) vs Las Heras/Virseda

The first and arguably best match on paper was the one between Marta Ortega and Bea González against multiple-time semi-finalists Barbara Las Heras and Verónica Virseda.

Ortega and González were playing incredibly from the start at centre court, blowing away the break-out duo 6-1 in the first set.

It woke up Las Heras and Virseda in the second set, who provided much more resistance to the two-time Challenger winners this year. However, it was Ortega and González who broke through in the end, winning 6-4 to punch their ticket to the round of 16.

Nogueira/Villalba vs Clasca/Cortiles

The recently-formed pairing of Ana Catarina Nogueira and Mari Carmen Villalba faced Anna Cortiles and Xenia Clasca over on court 3.

An incredibly one-sided affair from front to back, Villalba and Nogueira reached their highest level quickly.

They won 6-1 in the first set, and followed it up with a 6-2 in the second to put them into the round of 16.

Mesa/Jensen vs Barrera/Caparros

Carla Mesa and young Claudia Jensen took on the two Martas Marta Barrera and Caparros next on court 2.

Mesa and Jensen have impressed in the 2022 season, reaching the Getafe Challenger final already, and they impressed again on Wednesday.

Winning the opening set 6-2, they were met with more resistance in the second set. They still pulled it out 6-3, however, and are through to the round of 16.

Sainz/Marrero (5) vs Orsi/Bellver

Five-seed Marta Marrero and Lucía Sainz lit up centre court next in their bid against Sandra Bellver and Carolina Orsi.

The former number ones Sainz and Marrero were overwhelming favourites heading into the match, but soon found themselves a break down.

Like number ones do, they came back and took the set 6-3, and blew away their Spanish-Italian opposition 6-0 in the second set to go through to the next round.

 Fernández/Bidahorria vs Jarlskog/Eriksson

The qualifying pair of Claudia Fernández and Julieta Bidahorria stepped onto the Royal Stage's centre court next against wild cards Ida Jarlskog and Åsa Eriksson.

The Swedish wild cards showed details of class, but were ultimately no match for the solid duo of Claudia Fernández and Julieta Bidahorria.

Sweeping the opening set 6-0, Jarlskog and Eriksson got a single game in the second set but ultimately fell 6-0 6-1.

Fernández is through to her first-ever round of 16 at 16 years old. She will now face the number ones Alejandra Salazar and Gemma Triay.

Osoro/Iglesias (7) vs Martínez/Velasco

Seven-seed Aranza Osoro and Victoria Iglesias were in action for the final match in the women's matchday, facing qualifiers Ara Martínez and Jimena Velasco.

While the first set was straightforward, winning 6-1, Osoro and Iglesias had more problems in the second.

It went to a tiebreak, but they finally did emerge as winners 7-6(3) to go through to the round of 16.
