Carla Mesa and Lucía Martínez shake up the quarter finals in Valladolid

At the  Club Raqueta de Valladolid,, it was time to decide the eight pairings that would feature in the women's quarter finlas. The world number ones Majo and Mapi Sánchez Alayeto took on Cynthia Pérez and Andrea Medina. The players coached by Jorge Martínez needed just 42 minutes to win 6-1 / 6-1 and continue their defence of top spot in the rankings.

Elisabet Amatriaín and Patricia Llaguno took little time in dispatching Vanesa Alonso and Isabel Domínguez, dropping just one game en route to the quarter finals.

Also featuring in the quarter finals will be Catalina Tenorio and Victoria Iglesias who comfortably defeated Paula Eyheraguibel and Aranzazu Osoro. The players coached by Javier Peña claimed two breaks in the opening set and in the second set it was a similar story, as the Spanish/Argentine duo won 6-2 again.

Carla Mesa and Lucía Martínez pulled off the upset of the round, knocking out Alba Galán and María Del Carmen Villalba. Mesa and Martinez took the first set 6-3, with one break sufficient. In the second set, Galan and Villalba reacted and won 6-3 to force a third set. The Canary Islander and the Andalusian upped their game in the decider and won 6-4 to reach the quarter finals.

The world number five pairing, Carolina Navarro and Cecilia Reiter were up against Sandra Hernández and Ana Fernández de Ossó. The players coached by Horacio Álvarez Clementi dominated the first set completely to win 6-0. In the second, Ana Fernandez and Sandra Hernandez got two games on the scoreboard but came up short 6-2.

The number four seeds, Gemma Triay and Lucía Sainzencountered more problems in their match against Beatriz González Fernández and Elena Ramírez. The recent finalists at the Estrella Damm Barcelona Open won the first set 6-3. In the second set, Bea Gonzalez and Elena Ramirez tried to stay alive but lost 6-4 against the pairing coached by Pablo Ayma.

The world number twos, Alejandra Salazar and Marta Marrero made their debut in the Valladolid Open against Angela Caro and Marta Talavan. It was by no means a walk in the park for the second favourites. They won the first set 6-4 and the second 6-3.

The last pairing to reach the quarter finals were Marta Ortega and Ariana Sánchez who defeated Verónica Vírseda and Nuria Rodríguez. The youngest pairing ever to win an Open didn't give their opponents much of a chance. They won the first 6-3 and displayed the same dominance in the second, which also ended 6-3.

With this result, the action came to an end at the Club Raqueta de Valladolid. Here is the quarter final lineup:
