12 pairings sprint into the last sixteen of the Vallbanc Andorra La Vella Open

The fourth day of competition in the Pyrenees saw the main draw get under way at the Vallbanc Andorra La Vella Open 2018.

The first clash saw Maxi Grabiel and Pablo Lijó take on Martín Sánchez Piñeiro and José Antonio García Diestro. The altitude means the ball flies faster, and that's a dream scenario for hard hitting Pablo Lijó, who was well supported by the controlled game of Maxi Grabiel. Diestro and Piñeiro's third spell together didn't get off to the best start as they went down 6-1 after half an hour. In the second set Diestro and Piñeiro went 2-0 up but Grabiel and Lijó recovered from that break and then broke themselves to win 6-4.

At the Club Principadel, Gonzalo Rubio and Ernesto Moreno defeated Willy Lahoz and Borja Yribarren 6-3 / 6-4.

The second match of the morning at the Poliesportiu brought together Uri Botello - Javier Ruiz and Ignacio González Gadea - Aday Santana. After reaching their first semifinals in Mijas, Botello and Ruiz are in the form of their lives and destroyed their opponents 6-1 in the first set. Gadea and Santana countered by breaking in the first game of the second set but Botello and Ruiz are on fire right now and broke twice to win 6-4.

The second match of the morning at Principadel was between Jordi Muñoz - Aris Patiniotis and Lucas Bergamini Lucas CampagnoloAn injury to Aris Patiniotis at 2-2 forced him to retire and the Brazilians sailed through.

Javier Rico and Jorge Nieto also made it through with a 6-4 / 6-2 win against makeshift pairing Federico Chingotto and Fernando Poggi .

The morning session on centre court ended with  Gonzalo Díaz and Germán Tamame vs Ramiro Moyano and Luciano CapraAfter various exchanges of breaks, Diaz and Tamame came out on top in the first set 7-5. All four players were making the most of the quick conditions to hit the ball hard and Moyano and Capra turned the situation around in the second set, winning 6-2 in just over 20 minutes. They employed the same formula in the third set and won 6-3 after just over two hours.

The afternoon session started with qualifiers Miguel Ángel Solbes and Jorge Ruiz Gutiérrez against Juan Cruz Belluati and Juan LebrónSolbes and Ruiz kept up with their opponents until the sixth game, when Belluati and Lebron went up a couple of gears and won 6-2 in under 28 minutes. Lebron's power and Belluati's control ensured it was a smooth ride, as they won 6-1 in the second set.

At Principadel, Álvaro Cepero and Sebastián Nerone were made to work hard in a 4-6 / 7-6 / 6-3 victory against Rafael Méndez and Diego Ramos.

The world number 5 pairing, Cristian Gutiérrez and Franco Stupaczuk took on Juan Manuel Restivo and José Rico. Despite not having played together in a long time, Restivo and Rico really clicked in the first set and forced a tiebreak which they ended up losing (7-6). In the second set they couldn't keep up with the pace and it was one way traffic for Stupaczuk and a colossal Cristian Gutierrez, who won 6-1.

Pedro Alonso-Mtnez and Matías Nicoletti tested Lucas Silveira da Cunha and Denis Tomas Perino in their first main draw appearance together and the win went to Alonso and Nicoletti 6-3 / 7-5.

The last winners of the day at the club were Agustín Gómez Silingo and Alejandro Ruizwho overcame Francisco "Chico" Gomes and Federico Quiles in a gruelling duel 6-4 / 6-7 / 6-4.

The star clash of the day was the last one on centre court: Adrián Allemandi and Javier Garrido versus Juan Mieres and Miguel LampertiThe duo from Bahia Blanca knew they needed to start strong to avoid any potential upsets and won the first set 6-1. Garrido and Allemandi improved in the second set and connected fewer unforced errors but still came up short 6-4.
